More things I've learned... re: maternity clothes

Since having Liana, I've learned so much more about babies and even a post-partum me. :)

Here are some pieces of advice I have to share:
  • Pick 2nd trimester clothes that you really like and that are flexible for two different seasons because you will be wearing them again post-partum :)
  • Try to choose at least a few maternity tops that you can also use as nursing tops because, again, you will probably be wearing them post-partum. I'm so bummed that I have a bunch of cute maternity tops that I can't wear now because they're too hard to nurse in. Although, now that it's getting colder, I'm finding that I can wear a nursing tank under a 'regular' shirt, and it's not so difficult to lift the shirt to get to the tank opening. (but sometimes I just can't do it fast enough for Liana's taste!)
  • Nursing tops usually have two layers or have a cross-over bodice that can be pulled aside. I also have one that has a large stretchy cowl neck that can be pulled down. I've also seen a great website that has cool nursing clothes that have hidden zippers in two front seams. :) http://www.nursingmamas.com/ecm/Home.html I might get a sweatshirt from there :)
  • Find a Target that has Liz Lange maternity pants with an adjustable waistline. Instead of the large typical maternity waistband, it has what looks like a regular waistband, but at each side, the elastic is exposed, and it has holes in it where you can insert a button to make the waist smaller or larger. Pretty cool :) Didn't figure that out until after the baby, but it worked out great so that I could wear some warm black pants again by making the waist smaller :)

I am a New Mom!

Liana Irene Su was born at 11:17am on Thursday, June 22, 2006. She was 10 lbs & 2 oz, and was delivered by caserean because they were actually estimating that she was close to 12 lbs!

I have learned a lot of new things since being pregnant AND becoming a new mom:

  • If your baby doesn't like being dressed, then buy short sleeved onesies/creepers/whatever with snaps all down the front -MUCH easier than fighting little arms & hands to pull something over their head and try to get them into long sleeves. The fight is worth it for sleeping gowns, though :)

  • Bibs are great for breastfeeding -they help protect you and the baby from drool :)

  • Lilly Pads* ROCK, as do breastfeeding pillows, and nursing stools :)

  • *I am allergic to some bra materials. Unfortunately, disposable nursing pads are made of something similar that make me itch terribly!!! I tried cotton washable, but they don't absorb anything they just soak straight through your bra to your shirt. So, then I tried "Soothies" for sore nipples, but they only last 1-3 days for $12 -not worth it. They also don't block leakage very well. So, today, I got some Lilly Pads! Not only do they prevent leakage, but they feel great! And they're so easy to put on and take off. Just beware that if you take them off after you've had them on for a while because you don't leak you can get engorged and they may gush when you take them off!

  • Nipple shields are great if you really need them for their intended purpose, but they are hard to wean off...

  • Just bought a "Breast Bottle" It's amazing! Very soft and totally shaped like a breast! I can't wait to try it -in about another week or so. Check it out! http://www.adiri.com/main/index.php

  • Buy maternity/nursing bras at Target! They have some very comfortable bras. Cotton, nursing tanks, and nursing sports bras for only $12!!! I love Target!

Things I learned when I was pregnant:

  • Pelvic exams hurt
  • You bleed for up to 6 weeks after birth to clean out your uterus -blech
  • Your pregnancy experience will be unique. Try not to compare yourself to anyone else... (yeah, right)

  • More as I go along... :)
